Watching the episode from season 3 at this moment and being Dutch i also wondered where this phrase originated.. apparently there is some truth as to Dwight’s statement, damn..

That it derives from the Netherlands(The Dutch) in the 15th century when workers would throw their sabots (wooden shoes) into the wooden gears of the textile looms to break the cogs, fearing the automated machines would render the human workers obsolete.
